"In London, from the 1850’s more and more people could afford to have a carriage, horse or a chaise. The horse did pollute the street. A worrying researcher of the future said this in the 1870’s: if the number of horses and carriages rises this way, hazardous waste will cover the Oxford Street in knee-height. Then the automobile was invented..."

There is nothing new under the sun. The problem of hazardous waste is not a 20th century phenomenon. The scientists of the 19th century were excited by this problem, and in the 20th century they started to search for practical solution. Hungary is not England, neither Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén county, where the ÉHG (North Hungarian Waste Management c.Plc) runs. The company was established in the summer of 1992 by the Cirkont Hulladékgazdálkodási Zrt. (Cirkont Waste Management c.Plc) (with 78.9% share) and the Local Government of Kazincbarcika (with 21.1% share).

It emphasises the performance of the company that it solves the complex waste management of Kazincbarcika and 33 villages in the area that affects approximately 100 thousand people. Within the cleaning services, our company refers to the collection, transport, placement, and disposal of municipal solid waste, waste with hazardous oil content, and the clearance. The ÉHG Zrt. increases the standard of its service. In 1997, it has opened the most up-to-date regional municipal waste landfill of the county in Sajókaza. We place the collected waste in landfill of Orbán Valley, in Sajókazai Hulladékkezelő Centrum (Waste Centre of Sajókaza).

The landfill was built by the support of ISPA, and it is operated by the ÉHG Zrt. It is 2 million m3, and insulated, so that is solves the problems of waste for 25 years in the surrounding cities and villages.

The following facilities were realised in the Sajókazai Hulladékkezelő Centrum:

  1. A 100.000 tonne/ year capacity construction debris processor
  2. There is a composting plant with 40.000 tonne/year capacity, where useable compost is made from organic waste, and green waste with the use of sewage sludge
  3. There is a ”post-selecting device” that’s capacity is 30.000 tonne/year. It selects afterwards the selectively collected waste
  4. The bypass road started to be build beside Szuhakálló and Múcsony, this year in August. The delivery will be in 2008.
  5. To guarantee the safety transport, a transhipment station will be built in Ózd, in the spring of 2008.

The project costs 3.2 billion HUF. The European Union supported by 50%, and the Hungarian State supported by 40% this project.

It is in our plans, that we expand our service in the region, and if it is required, we expand our service through the frontier. In the he future, we plan to expand our capacity, the placement of hazardous waste, and its disposal.

At the landfill there is a machine that compacts the waste (so called ”kompaktor”). This machine is an inevitable tool of a modern landfill.

The new landfill fulfils the environmental protection requirements. It collection of leachate is solved, the facilities that refer to the reparation of rainwater have already been built, and the enclosed landfill has the monitoring that fits to the standard.

We have introduced the selective waste collection in the service area. There are four containers at the installed waste collection units which are appropriate for collecting paper, plastic, glass, and medal boxes.
